GETTING STARTED

NEWSLETTER NO-NOS SEGMENT 1

Go out to MailChimp.com and setup your account. It’s free!

Click on the confirmation email to
start your account.

It's FREE for the first 12,000
subscribers.

Getting Started - The Steps:
1)  The List
2)  Create Sign-Up Forms
3)  Design Campaign (your newsletter)
4)  Measure Results (reporting)

The list is FIRST because before
you can send an email out, you need
to have permission from your subscribers
to send it so you avoid SPAM.  Get
your list from customers, your
email, from people who can use the
information you're providing.

CREATING YOUR LIST
1)  Click "List"

NAVIGATION:
1)  Import if you have a list
already in Excel (Setup:  First Name,
last name, email)
2)  Add People to do one at time.
3)  Remove People if you've
need to remove a name.
4)  Send to List is used AFTER you
build your campaign (your first newsletter.)
5)  Settings - we'll use this more
in the "Autoresponder" segment.
6)  Replicate - copy list
7)  Delete - delete the list
8)  Forms - where you create your
Signup Subscribers form for your
website.
9)  List Data - performance of subscribers.
10) Groups - creating sub-groups
within a list (ie vendors vs consumers)

HOMEWORK:

1)  Setup Mailchimp.com
2)  Create your List either from
Excel, your email list or by hand.

Step 2 - SIGN-UP FORMS

1)  Click "List"
2)  Click "Forms"
3)  Click "Signup Form" in the drop-down
4)  Click "Design it" to customize
5)  Choose your background color.  Ask your
graphic or web designer your colors as HEX
colors to get an exact match.  Or, if you're
using Serif WebPlus, click the "Color
Scheme Designer" and find the color there.

Add Header:
1) Click on the "Add Header Image Graphic
2) Click "Add"
3) Upload image from your computer, a URL
(such as Photobucket) or from gallery
would be if you already have an image
uploaded.  
4)  Type the size of your header
(usually 600x120 is a good size)
5)  Align left, right or center
6)  Click "Outer Wrapper" to omit
the border around your header.
7)  Click "Edit" in the message box
to personalize your sign up form.
8)  Fonts:  highlight the sentence,
and click the drop-down under "Fonts"
9)  Color:  highlight the sentence
and click the "A" multi-color box to
choose your color.
10)  Click "Save and Exit."

HOMEWORK:  
Use the directions above to create
your first sign-up form!

SEGMENT 2:  CAMPAIGN

1)  Click "Campaign"
2)  Click "Create Campaign"
3)  Name your Campaign (April Campaign)
4)  Message Subject VERY IMPORTANT you
keep it relevant and non-spammy. Make me wanna
open it.
5)  Check off "Track opens" add analytics
6)  If you're sending to different
time zones, click Time Warp.
7)  Integrate w/ Facebook and it will
automatically send the newsletter out
to your FB fans.
8)  Click next
9)  Under "Design Genius" click
"start from scratch" if you want your own logo
10)  Select a starter layout for your
email
11)  Select your background color
12)  Edit the very top message
13)  Click "Header"
14)  Click "Header Style" to add your logo
15)  Rest your mouse on the right and click
"use image"
16)  Browse "From Gallery" and use the
same header image you uploaded for your signup
17)  Type in dimensions 600x120
18)  Selct image by double-clicking.
19)  Click "Save" at the bottom.

Hyperlinking to Facebook and Twitter
1)  Click "edit"
2)  Highlight the "Friend on Facebook
3)  Click the Hyperlink ball-and-chain icon
4)  copy and paste the URl from your FB Fan page

Writing Articles
Just click "Edit" and start typing!

Sending a Test:
Scroll to the bottom and click "send
test."

When you're done with the template, click
"next"

Why do a "Plain Text" newsletter?
Some people do not have HTML (pictures)
on their email.  Double-check your wording
to make sure it's accurate.  You can click on
"Copy Text from HTML" to paste what is
in your template over to this form.

Click NEXT

Schedule your campaign for when you'd
like it sent and YOU'RE DONE!
